In today's episode, we dive into the transformative potential of AI in promoting equity in education with Victoria Thompson, one of ISTE's 2023 “Top 20 to Watch” and author of the book Elevate Equity in EdTech. While many educators are understandably concerned about AI's potential biases, Victoria shares her perspective on how AI tools like speech-to-text, translators, and others are leveling the playing field in classrooms in remarkable ways. Victoria works to give you some actionable insights on introducing AI, how we're already using it, and ways we can understand how AI can be used positively. She also encourages us to look at AI startups and certifications with a critical eye and shares what she looks for in a certification program.

📝 Transcript

  • Leverage AI Tools for Equity: Utilize AI tools like speech-to-text, language translators, and ink-to-text applications to create more inclusive and accessible classrooms. These tools help break down language and accessibility barriers, enabling all students to participate fully.

  • Understand AI’s Everyday Impact: Recognize that many AI tools are already in use, such as voice dictation for emails and AI-driven form generation. Emphasize the importance of these everyday tools in promoting equity, rather than focusing solely on advanced AI systems like ChatGPT.

  • Be the Human Behind the Screen: While AI can assist in many tasks, educators must remain the decision-makers. Always fact-check AI-generated content, especially when it involves creative or novel topics, to ensure accuracy and relevance.

  • Stay Informed on AI Developments: Keep up with the latest AI tools and their applications in education. Engage with professional development opportunities that provide a robust understanding of AI, including certifications that require practical application and portfolio work.

  • Teach Students to Navigate AI Wisely: Incorporate lessons that help students critically evaluate AI outputs. For instance, challenge students to assess the accuracy of AI-generated content about themselves, fostering critical thinking and digital literacy.

  • Approach AI Tools with Caution: Be selective about adopting new AI tools. Avoid jumping into every new platform without assessing its rigor and the value it adds to your teaching practice. Ensure that any AI certifications or programs you pursue are comprehensive and provide tangible outcomes.

  • Promote Digital Literacy and Equity: Use AI tools to help students from diverse backgrounds communicate and collaborate effectively, especially in multilingual environments. Ensure that all students are equipped with the skills to use these tools, promoting a more inclusive classroom environment.

  • Be Wary of AI Land Grabs: Be cautious of AI startups offering quick certifications or products without substantial educational value. Research the background and credibility of these tools before integrating them into your teaching.
